NEW Hurricane Planning

Hurricane Planning Course

This course has be designed to provide planners with the latest methods, techniques, and “lessons learned”  for developing and revising their hurricane plans and procedures.
As you work through the hurricane planning process, you will realize that:

• Hurricanes have very predictable consequences.
• There is a wealth of information available to help your planning and decision making.

However, there remains a number of uncertainties associated with hurricane forecasting and the response of both decision makers and the pubic at risk. The challenge for planners is to integrate the certain with the uncertain into a response system that acts based on the best information available.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
• Evaluate hurricane advisory products issued by the NWS to determine the level of threat a storm may pose for their communities.
• Explain the limitations and uncertainties in forecasting hurricane intensity, forward speed, and direction.
• Apply technical information from Hurricane Evacuation Studies and other sources to developing and revising their hurricane plans and procedures.
• Determine when to initiate response actions before and after a storm.
• Develop a hurricane response schedule as a guide for time-phased priority response actions.

The primary audience for this course are planners, public and private with current or potential responsibilities for hurricane planning, pre-storm preparation, evacuations, business shut-down and start-up and post-storm response operations. Others who may benefit from this course include:

• Safety Personnel
• Risk Management Personnel
• EOC Logistics Personnel
• HR Managers
• Other Agency Planning Personal, etc.

Participation in this course assumes some familiarity with planning and preparedness, but does not assume a background in meteorology. This course also includes exercises that you should incorporate into the training.
